Last night Edinburgh Jazz & Blues Festival-goers were treated at The Jazz Bar, to a slightly over 1 hour set of mostly original compositions from the irrepressible saxophonist Sue McKenzie. Originally hailing from Glasgow, Sue has great patter and just as impressive musical chops, plus a refreshingly atypical trio line-up: Esther Swift on harp and Chilean-Scot Jose Rojas Navea on percussion.
Six pieces were aired, with the trio being augmented as the set progressed by three more of Sue’s friends: Tom Lyne on double bass, Patrick Kenny on trombone and Russell Kirk (who had reportedly just stepped off an aeroplane from Baltimore) on sax.
Sue’s playing had an attractively warm sound and great swing, plus extended improvisation (as in her piece, ‘Bold’ that strayed from 11/8 to 7/8) happily held no fear for her. Her band-mates likewise evidenced significant chops, so going forward one looks forward to hearing much more from all six musicians.
