Electric Chamber – Electric Chamber
(Self-released on 7/10/22. EP review.)
One advantage of being a freelance writer is that it is easier to control what music one writes about. And being somewhat of a ‘dove’ this writer prefers to write about music she finds the most interesting and/or energising, an example of which is by Portugal-born but now London-based guitarist and composer Vitor Pereira and his band, Electric Chamber, in the new EP of the same name. (Pereira’s album Jung was released on the same date as this one and was also reviewed by this writer.)
Electric Chamber has a quartet band line-up compared to Jung’s quintet, another important change being the addition of accomplished cellist Rupert Gillett. This seems to add a Classical music feel, a sense of precision and an augmented lyricism to the EP. At just under 24 minutes this is happily not the shortest EP on the market yet is of such quality that one wishes it were actually a full-length album.
Through all four tracks of the EP, the cello and guitar especially bring a delicacy and charm that is more often found in Classical music, nevertheless this EP is undoubtedly Jazz. Adam Nathoo and Adam Teixeira too on tenor saxophone and drums respectively are exemplary.
Hats off as well to Pereira for the colour and feeling of his compositions, which together with the lightness of touch and uplifting lyricism make this a very cheering listen. Those of you who are within reach of the current launch gigs (listed below) and can attend, are to be envied!
