Cool article about what might be going on in a Jazz singer’s brain, by Melissa Forbes, University of Southern Queensland. Nice mention of Raymond MacDonald & Graeme Wilson’s book on the primacy of improvisation, ‘The Art Of Becoming’ (2020).

Interesting item (which resonates with many other similar studies) from the recent Edinburgh International Culture Summit 2020 Special Edition, The Transformational Power of Culture. “Making Connections: The impact of music on brain development” from Assal Habibi, Assistant Research Professor of Psychology at the Brain and Creativity Institute, University of Southern California.
Composer David Bruce’s very excellent talk about Gyorgy Ligeti’s ‘musical illusions’: though not jazz, lights up similar parts of the brain. 😀 (Big thanks to Simon B for the heads up re this one.)

Not Scottish jazz, but totally brilliant nevertheless ; ) The phenomenon that is the Sun Ra Arkestra was due to play here in Edinburgh last month, but of course the present pandemic meant that event was cancelled. Hopefully it won’t be long before they tour through Scotland again, perhaps outing some new tunes.
OK, so this is a bit different to what is normally posted on this site. Welshman Chris Buck recreates the sound of John Lennon’s guitar on the Beatles’ ‘Revolution’. Quite interesting, even for those of us who don’t play guitar?
Not jazz, but lights up the same parts of the brain that jazz does. A brief interview from 2017 with an overview of some of her work: Meredith Monk.
